Location: Sheraton Greensboro Hotel at Four Seasons/Joseph S. Koury Convention Center
Cost: $165. Online registration will close July 8. Payment must be mailed by July 9 in order to be processed. Some sessions require additional payment. No credit card payments can be accepted.
Program Highlights
Summer Conference for Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) educators is always a time for updates, networking, and professional renewal. An exciting agenda has been planned for you with this in mind. This conference will give you an opportunity to update your skills, improve low-performing objectives, and network with other FACS teachers across the state. Our Family and Consumer Sciences Conference theme this year as a continuation from the 2011 NCAFCS Conference in March is “The Future STEMS from Family and Consumer Sciences Education.” We hope to see you all at the conference!

- Curriculum version 2 rollout sessions – Foods I and Personal Finance
- Classroom bank rollout sessions – Foods I and Personal Finance
- Attend sessions on FCCLA and making the student organization an integral part of instruction
- Attend FACS/FCCLA district meetings
- Make learning more relevant by integrating project-based learning
- Make learning more convenient by integrating the latest hand-held tools of technology
Preconferences
- Developing and Teaching CTE Honors Courses, $100
Monday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Preregistration and payment required for this session. The Honors Course Policy requires teachers interested in offering honors CTE courses to develop and submit for approval to local administrators a portfolio of curriculum materials for each honors course. This portfolio is called the Honors Teaching Preparation Portfolio. The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with the requirements and procedures for preparing the Honors Teaching Preparation Portfolio for any CTE Honors class. Join in the networking and get ready for teaching an honors course in the fall. This session is presented by Cynthia Rossi Sovich, M. Preregistration and payment required for this session. Want to be a “MAD FOOD SCIENTIST” for the day? Come to this session and experiment with SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING/DESIGN, MATHEMATICS, and SUSTAINABILITY in the field of food safety, sanitation, and Food Science. Improve your understanding of fundamental chemistry of foods components including proteins, carbohydrates, and fats and microbiology. Get some ideas of teaching strategies you can use in any foods-related curriculum. This session is presented by Dr. Salam Ibrahim, NC A & T State University. Register through the summer conference registration system for this preconference opportunity. - ServSafe® Instructors' Credentialing Course, $200
Monday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Wednesday, 7-9 p.m.
Preregistration and payment required for this session. ServSafe® 5th Edition is a nationally recognized food safety program that is integral to Foods II-Advanced, Foods II-Food Technology, Culinary Arts and Hospitality I and II, and ProStart® I and II. ServSafe® is also a recommended credential for other FACS teachers teaching foods-related content. Participation will make the teacher eligible to become a certified instructor and proctor of ServSafe® 5th Edition. To become a registered instructor and proctor, one must score 75% or higher on the instructor’s exam. This session is presented by Dr. Angela Fraser, Clemson University. Monday, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., and Tuesday, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Preregistration and payment required for this session. Module 4, Professional Linkages in the Learning Community, focuses on understanding how to network to achieve optimum effectiveness and realizing benefits of linkages formed within the school and community. Emphasis is placed on role and behavior expectations of teachers and students in a professional learning community. Strategies are shared for connecting with resource people, organizing an advisory council, becoming actively involved in professional organizations, providing work-based learning opportunities, and promoting CTE programs and CTSO activities within the school and community. This session is presented by Shannon Braxton, Orange County Schools. Register through the summer conference registration system for this preconference opportunity. - FACS Teaching Basic Apparel, $150
Monday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Tuesday, 8:30 -11:30 a.m.
Preregistration and payment required for this session. This workshop examines basic teaching techniques for hand and machine stitching, pattern and fabric preparation, pattern layout and cutting, managing the classroom, sewing lab, grading projects, and successful teaching techniques. Participants will need to bring a sewing machine and basic sewing equipment (scissors, tape measure, machine toolbox, thread pins and pin cushion). Materials for sample projects will be provided. This session is presented by Janet D. Ward, Retired Teacher. Register through the summer conference registration system for this preconference opportunity. - ProStart® I and II Training, $150
Monday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Tuesday, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Preregistration and payment required for this session. ProStart® is a two-year, credentialing program for high school students interested in a career in culinary arts and foodservice management. During this workshop, current and future ProStart® teachers, CDCs, IMCs, Guidance Counselors, Administrators, CTE Directors, and educators wishing to learn more about the ProStart® program will be provided with an orientation to the ProStart® program and steps for successfully implementing and coordinating the program in their schools.
